Floating Mountain

Floating Mountain is a landform transit center in Los Angeles Chinatown. It contains a "city-to-city" bus station and a gondola station. Meanwhile, it is a public rooftop garden that serves the local community.

Floating Mountain是位于洛杉矶唐人街的一个交通枢纽。它包含一个城际长途汽车站和一个缆车站。同时,它也是一个服务当地社区的公共屋顶花园。

Traditional Eastern architecture and gardens are usually designed as a whole, they blend with each other to create an atmosphere that serves to fulfill one’s spiritual pursuits. The concept of the "Floating Mountain" is inspired by traditional Chinese painting, in which the mountain looks like floating because of the perspective angle.  Last but not least, the element of Chinese Veranda is re-formed as the shading path that implies the walking circulation.

The project is like small hills on top of three pieces of land, which make the landscape extend to the top of the building. It is also designed as a rooftop garden that can be accessed from 5 different slopes.

All the interior programs are on the second floor, which leaves the first-floor space for bus circulation.

The interior programs are inside the mountain.  All the envelope of the interior space is glass, which allows more nature light. Also, that creates the feeling of transparency and light weight.

The color pallet is from the Chinese painting "Thousands Miles of Mountains and Rivers" by Wang Meng Xi, 1133 AD

Floating Mountain is a very sustainable architecture. The ideal of “nature” is not only embodied in the design concept but in the innovation and integration of green design solutions as well. It indirectly causes huge energy saving by encouraging public transport. Also, the landform over the building makes a delay in temperature change during morning and night, which make the interior temperate more consistent. Furthermore, Nature ventilation and sunlight decrease energy consumption in cooling and lighting.
