FULL RESOLUTION STUDY
1:1 Full Resolution Study (FRS) is used as a proof of concept when resolving details, material thickness, and tectonics at a larger scale by combining standard building components that one could purchase at a local hardware store. The quick two-week design charrette introduces design collaboration and materiality assemblage with a focus on form and construction.
Our project began as a reflection of the existing architecture in this space. We also sought a way to both reflect and manipulate it. A way to guide the audience's experience and create different visual experiences through interaction with the device on different scales (far, middle, and close).
The weight of the upper structure seen in the heavy paneling and puncturing objects reflects the heaviness of the existing building near the site. It feels precarious, tremulous, perched. It gives us pause as it floats.
The base frame duplicates the building in shape and rotation. The framing is specifically crafted edge out to give a lightness to the frame, making it almost disappear under the weight above.
The vertical pieces on the base frame are a direct reflection of the structures that hang on the outer walls of the building. They create narrow windows that emphasize the void as much or more than the form.
The upper structure creates an interactive “interior/exterior” space. It is an alleyway revealing the structure of the upper piece as well as a window to the building and projects beyond.
The origin of the objects that puncture the upper are similar to the “raree show” cameras, which project a image for the viewer to experience through a narrow aperture. The objects take this visual idea and give a very clear relationship to the inner portion of the structure as well as through the structure to visual experiences beyond.
The Color
The Color The relationship between the color and form is not related to the building, but instead to the yellow ceilings of the objects that form apertures into the library and the other structures populating this space.
We have, in effect, taken a slice out of the yellow world represented by the two sides and allowed access to the inner structure.
