Terracotta Facade
Architectural Terracotta is a sustainable and recyclable material that can be used in building facades as rain-screen systems. It can be extruded, cut into flat panels, and slanted on cylindrical surfaces before firing to get curved shapes. In this project, a parametric method has been developed to panel any developable poly-surfaces, analysis, and sort panels for estimating the budget. Collaborated with Zhiyu Lin & Jack Somer
Single Curvature Polysurface
Flatten to 2D & Subdivide
Re-Mapping to 3D
Each sub-surface on the developable polysurface is in single curvature, which means the entire polysurface can be unfolded to a 2d plane. Also, the curvatures on each surface are been monitored and limited to make sure they can be made of bending terracotta.
The terracotta panels are analyzed and sorted into five categories:
Flat Whole - White
Flat Trimed - Grey
Curved Whole - Red
Curved Trimed - Yellow
Extreme Small - Green
The clips and structural frames are also generated based on the location, orientation, and curvature of the panels.
